ABOUT THE FRANCHISE

"The main character drops out of high school in her second year, and aims at entering a university while working alone in Tokyo. A girl is betrayed by her friends and doesn't know what to do. Another girl is abandoned by her parents, and tries to survive in the city by doing part-time jobs. This world lets us down all the time. Nothing goes as planned. But we want something that we can continue to like. We believe there's a place where we belong. That's why we sing." - Official Synopsis

Girls Band Cry (ガールズバンドクライ Gāruzu Bando Kurai, also commonly abbreviated to ガルクラ GaruKura) is an original multimedia project created by Toei Animation. In conjunction with music agency agehasprings for composition and talent, and Universal Music Japan for Music Distribution. The project started in 2019 by an initiative in Toei Animation to expand their 3DCG department. Ex-Sunrise producer Tadashi Hirayama was approached by Toei to produce a new original music-centric anime project. HirayamaP brought in his colleagues from Love Live Sunshine, director Kazuo Sakai and screenwriter Jukki Hanada to form the core staff. Pre-production and planning began in mid 2019. The project was first unveiled in July 2021 when music agency agehasprings held an audition called「Girl's Rock Audition」 where they ended up selecting 5 girls to be cast as voice actors and real band members for Togenashi Togeari (トゲナシトゲアリ, also commonly abbreviated to トゲトゲ TogeToge).

Currently, the Girls Band Cry franchise has a 3DCG Anime, Music and Music Videos (Both in 2D and 3D), Live Concerts/Shows and Performances, Live2D Skits on Youtube, a bi-weekly web radio and a planned Game Project that has yet to be formally announced.

The anime premiered on April 6, 2024 in Japan, France, and Korea, without any official English release. In the upcoming months, the anime would be brought over to Indonesia and Thailand, carrying with them English subtitles alongside the native languages of those countries. As of August 13th, Girls Band Cry is available in North America by digital rental or purchase.

Hello, I'm Admin 🦔 (They/Them). Imagine I'm a hedgehog typing away at a tiny little keyboard. I tend to ramble a little bit, so forgive me.

I've been interested in GBC since a friend showed me "Nameless Name" releasing over a year ago, and have been closely following the project since. This franchise means a lot to me, so I hope that you continue to support GBC!

I've been out of practice with Japanese for almost 4 years since returning from Japan. But thanks to falling in love with GBC at first sight, I've been getting back into it with new passion. I'm now mainly in charge of the translations.
